On October 12, 2018, STMicroelectronics held a media conference in Beijing, and released and introduced the 12th new member of the STM32 series, STM32WB. The Internet of Things industry cannot lack wireless. The product line, STM32 products can not lack the IP related to wireless products, the release of STM32WB will help STM32 enter the wireless field and strengthen the influence of STM32 in the IoT market."

In this conference, HAKIM JAAFAR, STMicroelectronics STM32 ultra-low power and network microcontroller marketing manager introduced the 7 major product features of STM32WB. Let's take a look at the powerful features of STM32WB.

First, increase the possibility of wireless.

The STM32WB supports Bluetooth Bluetooth 5.0 and the protocol stacks of THREAD and ZigBee, and integrates an open 2.4G RF multi-protocol module.

1. Support Bluetooth 5.0 protocol stack. The data rate is doubled and supports 2 megabytes of high-rate transmission. It also supports BLE Mesh technology to improve network coverage.

2. Support the protocol stack of THREAD and ZigBee. The STM32WB's RF supports the 802.15.4 wireless communication standard, so it also supports the OpenThread and ZigBee protocol stacks. Both Bluetooth and OpenThread can be run simultaneously in dynamic and static mode.

Second, support dual core

The STM32WB separates the application from the RF. The application part is handled by the built-in M4 core, and the RF protocol stack is handled by the built-in M0 core. It guarantees full control and ultra-low power consumption. Let's take a look at the main features of STM32WB:

1, ultra low power consumption. In stop mode, the RF standby maintains 256K RAM and consumes only 1.8 microamps (μA). It consumes less than 50 nanoamps (nA) in shutdown mode.

2, peripherals, integrated SAI, can support audio needs in Bluetooth applications. In addition, we also integrate the Q-SPI interface, customers can connect external flash memory to increase the system's flash memory capacity.

3. In terms of operating voltage, STM32WB is a wide voltage product, from 1.7 to 3.6V.

Third, the Internet of Things protection

For the protection of the Internet of Things, in two ways:

1. RF protocol stack and application firmware update.
Take the remote firmware upgrade as an example. First, the key is in the security zone where M0+ exists. If there is a new firmware package, it will be placed in the flash space. M4 will detect the new firmware package and then put the firmware inside. The signature and key are sent to the M0+ subsystem for verification. If the verification signature does not match the key, the update is stopped; if the verification is consistent, the system decrypts the new firmware with a proprietary key and then burns the code. The entire process is monitored and security is guaranteed.

2. Attack defense measures of STM32WB
First look at non-intrusive attacks, by making some tampering with the surrounding environment to get some signals or inject false signals to get the information you want. Faced with this situation, the STM32WB integrates a lot of sensors or detectors. The detector will detect abnormal signals periodically and make alarms, parity or JTAG readout protection. Or, under certain conditions, the flash memory is allowed to boot, allowing these abnormal signal channels to be turned off or alerted as much as possible.

The other is software attack. There are many kinds of software attacks, such as the underlying software to verify the attack on the encryption and extract the key, malware or virus software, and to open some or intercept your upgrade privileges. In the face of these attacks, how does STM32WB respond? Just mentioned CKS, the user key storage in the M0+ kernel domain, and it continues the previous STM32 encryption hardware engine, such as true random number and encryption accelerator, read protection, storage unit, 96-bit ID and so on.

Fourth, large-scale integration saves costs.

STM32WB maximizes integration and reduces the cost of the entire system in terms of cost considerations for communications in the Chinese market as well as in the global market. Not only the cost of the chip, but also the cost of the ecosystem

First look at the cost of the chip, STM32WB saves the balun built-in external balun, so that the system cost is reduced by the minimum system external device; the internal LCD boost part is built in, while providing capacitive touch software, reducing circuit cost; at least only need Six (including crystal); in addition, at least two layers can be achieved in the application, which greatly reduces the cost.

At the ecosystem level, STM32WB continues the tradition of STM32 - software is free, whether it is from the protocol stack side (such as RF BLE5.0 OpenThread) or the general 802.14.5. In addition, the IDE integrated development environment and the STM32Cube software are also free.

Five, a wealth of product categories.

STM32WB has a variety of products to choose from. From the pin point of view, from the minimum 48-pin UQFN package to the maximum 100-foot WLCSP package; built-in flash memory from a minimum of 256K to a maximum of 1 megabyte.

6. Continue or share the existing ecosystem of STM32.
