According to IC Insights' latest MEMS report, products manufactured using microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology are expected to account for 73% of the $9.3 billion semiconductor sensor market in 2018, and 47% of the 24.1 billion sensors that are expected to ship globally this year.
The MEMS sensor market, including accelerometers, gyroscopes, pressure sensors and microphones, is expected to grow at an annual rate of 10% from $6.1 billion in 2017 to $6.8 billion in 2018. Shipments of MEMS sensors are expected to increase by 11% in 2018, compared to 19% in 2016.
It is expected that actuators using MEMS processes will generate an additional $5.9 billion in sales in 2018. These actuators use their MEMS sensors for translation and startup operations - for example, dispensing ink in a printer or administering a drug to a patient in a hospital. Total sales of sensors and actuators manufactured by MEMS are expected to grow 10% in 2018 to reach $12.7 billion, up nearly 18% from 2017 and 15% in 2016.
In terms of shipments, global shipments of MEMS sensors and actuators are expected to grow to 13.1 billion units at a rate of just under 12%, with growth rates of 11% and 20% in 2016 and 2017.
Between 2017 and 2022, MEMS sensor and actuator market revenues are expected to grow to $17.8 billion in 2022 with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.2%.
Between 2017 and 2022, global shipments of MEMS sensors and actuators are expected to reach 20.2 billion in 2022 at a compound annual growth rate of 11.4%.
The biggest market change in the next five years is that the ASP (average selling price) of MEMS devices will tend to be stable during the forecast period, which is significantly different from the sharp decline in MEMS device ASP over the past 10 years.
The compound annual growth rate of ASP for MEMS sensors and actuators is expected to be -2.0% between 2017 and 2022, and -4.7% for the period 2012-2017, and this figure is reached -13.6% during 2007-2012.
The ASP for MEMS sensors and actuators in 2017 was $0.97, and is expected to fall to $0.88 by 2022, compared to $2.57 and $1.24 in 2007 and 2012.
