In August, Gexin announced that it will shelve the 7nm FinFET project and adjust the corresponding R&D team to support the enhanced product portfolio. At the same time, in order to better display the core background and significant investment in ASIC design and IP, the core will establish a wholly-owned subsidiary of the ASIC business independent of the foundry business.
This year for Gexin, it is an important year for its transformation.
At the Gexin Shanghai Technical Seminar held on November 1st, Gexin introduced us to the latest developments in its transformation.
How is FDX combined with artificial intelligence?
FDX can be said to be one of the important technologies after the transformation of the core.
In July 2018, Gexin announced that its 22FDX technology has achieved more than $2 billion in global revenues with excellent performance and has been adopted in more than 50 customer designs.
It can be said that 22FDX is one of the most important technology platforms of the core. It provides an excellent mix of high performance, low power, low cost IoT, mainstream mobile devices, wireless communication interconnects and networking. The 22FDX has features designed to meet the needs of next-generation products for applications such as connectivity, mobile, IoT, wearables, networking and automotive.
At the Gexin Shanghai Technical Seminar, Yuntian Lifei and Ruixin Microelectronics announced that they have successfully developed the AI chip independently developed by Gexin 22FDX technology.
In this regard, Mr. Bai Nong, the vice president of Green Core and the general manager of Greater China, said: “The successful succession of the independent research and development of AI chips by Yunfei Litian and Ruixin Microelectronics is a great affirmation of 22FDX technology. It also confirms the demand for 22FDX technology in the Chinese market."
It is understood that the AI smart chip developed by Yuntian Lifei is specially designed for deep learning neural networks. Its technical route is to respond to the rapid iteration of artificial intelligence algorithms through a series of programmable processors for multi-layer neural networks.
Li Aijun, vice president of research and development at Shenzhen Yuntian Lifei Technology Co., Ltd. said: "After our tests, the performance, power consumption and area of the grid core 22FDX have certain advantages compared with the traditional 28nm process. For the AI chip field, the reduction The cost of AI chips is more likely to form a large-scale, industrialized development. The core 22FDX technology platform finds a balance between cost and performance, which is in line with the needs of the AI industry."
Chen Feng, senior vice president of Rockchip Microelectronics, said: "22FDX is a very reliable technology platform that effectively controls costs while ensuring performance and reducing power consumption, helping to increase our design flexibility. Sexuality to further meet the needs of the mass market."
Formally established a wholly-owned subsidiary Avera Semi
In addition to using the FDX process for the flow of artificial intelligence chips, Avena Semiconductor LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Grid's ASIC business, was formally established.
Avera Semi is led by Kevin O’Buckley, who has been the head of the ASIC business since the acquisition of IBM's microelectronics business in 2015.
O'Buckley said: “Now is the best time to set up a new company and focus on providing custom ASIC solutions. As data traffic and bandwidth demands proliferate, next-generation cloud and communication systems must deliver higher performance and handle unprecedented levels of processing. Complexity."
It is understood that Avera Semi can provide customers with ASIC products based on advanced and proven process technology, a rich IP portfolio, including high-speed SerDes, high-performance embedded TCAM, ARM core and embedded SRAM with performance and density optimization. A production-proven comprehensive design approach and a flexible ASIC business engagement model.
For the establishment of this subsidiary, Drew Henry, senior vice president and general manager of Arm Infrastructure Business Unit, said: “The team built by Arm and Avera Semi has a long history of cooperation, continuously improving PPA and launching innovative solutions. With computing needs With continuous evolution and diversification, we look forward to combining Arm Neoverse solutions and physical design IP with Avera's capabilities and technology to deliver unique value to a broad customer base."
John Koeter, vice president of IP marketing at Synopsys, said: "The long history of Synopsys and Gexin's cooperation allows us to offer a broad portfolio of high-quality DesignWare IPs in a range of core processes. We look forward to continuing the past success with Avera Semi. Provide designers with the necessary IP to deliver next-generation, high-performance SoC designs through advanced FinFET processes."
Battle of artificial intelligence
In the last two years, with the popularity of artificial intelligence, big data and mining, in order to meet different business needs and create product differentiation, there has been a self-developed chip trend in the market. Many Internet vendors, including Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Amazon and Baidu, have begun to invest in self-developed chips.
However, for these vendors, in addition to a large number of individuals with strong capital, can build their own front-end to back-end design team, most manufacturers still need to seek third-party ASIC design services. The experienced core ASIC team can provide customers with more and better services.
With the industry's most widely used ASIC design services, highly differentiated IP, custom chips and advanced packaging technology, the core provides a true end-to-end design solution that helps achieve “one-time success” in design and helps products quickly enter the market.
Automotive electronics, 5G connectivity, IoT, smart devices and other applications are booming in China. China's demand for 22FDX is growing. Greg will continue to support Chinese customers in these cutting-edge applications.
With the opening of the grid, we can easily find that whether it is the flow of artificial intelligence chips or the establishment of the wholly-owned subsidiary Avera Semi, it can be seen that Gexin has extended the advantages of its unique FDX process to The field of artificial intelligence, and for this new field, the battle of technology and technology has just begun!
