High isolation DC-DC and Toshiba intelligent gate driver in motor systems

Applications of Murata high isolation DC/DC converters and Toshiba intelligent gate drivers in motor systems

In the design of high power and high speed motor systems, choosing the right power conversion solution is crucial. Murata's high isolation DC/DC converter series, especially the MGJ series, and Toshiba's intelligent gate driver optocouplers, especially the TLP5214A, demonstrate their excellent technology and application value in this field.

Bridge configuration in motor systems

The commonly used bridge configurations in motor systems (such as half-bridge, full-bridge, or three-phase configurations) require reliable power management. The switching devices in these configurations, such as IGBTs or MOSFETs (including SiC and GaN), operate at high voltage and high frequency, requiring isolation between their gate drive PWM signals and drive power rails and ground lines to ensure system stability and safety.

Importance of high isolation DC/DC converters

To prevent the influence of high dV/dt switching nodes and reduce coupling capacitance, high isolation DC/DC converters resist local discharge effects through robust isolation barriers, ensuring long-term performance stability. The compact design of these converters saves board space and development time.

High isolation DC/DC converters designed for gate drive applications

Murata has introduced a series of high isolation DC/DC converters designed for gate drive applications, especially the MGJ series, to meet the common high isolation requirements in motor drives and inverters. These converters are designed to provide stable voltage and isolation for the "high-side" gate drive of bridge circuits. The MGJ series products are able to maintain constant load and provide stable output during IGBT/MOSFET switching. Their performance during power-on and power-off is also crucial to prevent device damage.

The MGJ series converters from Murata are suitable for various applications, including motor drive/motion control, solar inverters, UPS, alternative energy, high-power AC-DC conversion, traction, electric/hybrid vehicles, and welding, among others. These converters, with their asymmetric output voltage and patented technology, provide optimized drive levels, system efficiency, and EMI performance.

The MGJ6 series converters from Murata have a 14mm creepage distance and electrical clearance, making them suitable for reinforced isolated gate driver power supply applications in 690V AC industrial electrical distribution systems. The MGJ6 series converters have a rated power of 6W and offer a wide 2:1 input voltage range. The output voltage options include 15/-10V, 20/-5V, and 15/-5V, making them suitable for power applications requiring up to 3kV DC-DC link voltage.

Toshiba Intelligent Gate Driver Optocoupler TLP5214A

Toshiba's TLP5214A is an intelligent gate driver optocoupler with a built-in IGBT non-saturation (VCE(SAT)) detector. It is suitable for IGBT saturation monitoring according to method (c), active mirror clamp, and fault signal feedback. TLP5214A provides excellent performance and stability, especially in terms of transient pulse noise during switching and non-saturation periods. Additionally, it helps minimize the design workload of peripheral circuits, reduce external components, and decrease PCB area.

Protection Mode

When TLP5214A enters protection mode, the FAULT output LED on the feedback side will light up, and the FAULT terminal output will switch from high level to low level to indicate IGBT error. If the protection mode continues, the FAULT output LED on the secondary side will also light up, and a current of approximately 10mA will start flowing between VCC2 and VE terminals, thereby increasing power loss on the secondary side. When the protection mode is activated, the system must be immediately shut down and restarted (see Figures 3.7 and 3.8).
